NYSC At 50: Corps Members Embark On Walk For Unity In Zamfara

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has organised a Unity Walk in Zamfara, urging corp members to maintain discipline, good conduct and hard work.

NYSC Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Abdussalam Alhassan, gave the charge during the walk by corps members and staff members in the state as part of activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the scheme.

“The NYSC management in the state has put together week-long activities and programmes, which begins today with unity walk.

“Today’s activities are meant to create awareness on the achievements of the scheme over the years.

“The scheme was established in 1973 by Gen. Yakubu Gowon, the then Head of State, to rehabilitate, reconstruct and reconcile our dear nation after the civil war,’’ the coordinator said.

According to him, the scheme’s objectives include: developing common ties among the Nigerian youths and promoting national unity and integration.

“This is to ensure that Nigerian youths are exposed to the modes of living of the people in different parts of Nigeria.

“My dear children, as we participate in this unity walk, let us remember the efforts of our founding fathers.

“Let us see how best we can contribute our own quota toward sustaining the scheme in the years to come.

“Be disciplined in your conduct, embrace dignity of labour, adhere strictly to instructions and avoid all forms of youthful exuberance”, he said.

Alhassan appealed to the corps members to shun any act that could tarnish their image and those of their families, the scheme and Nigeria as a whole.

“As we all know, NYSC have zero tolerance for misconduct. As corps members, you are expected to adhere to the rules and regulations of the scheme,’’ he said.

The coordinator urged the corps members to emulate their predecessors in the areas of primary assignments, community development and services as well as participation in the conduct of credible elections.

The walk started from Government Science Secondary School, Gusau (NYSC temporary orientation camp) to Government House, Gusau.
