FG, States Begin Discussions On Minimum Wage Review

No Plan for 100% pay rise'

The Federal Government and state representatives have initiated discussions aimed at enhancing the minimum wage, a step towards alleviating the impact of inflation caused by the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of exchange rates.

The outcome of these discussions will serve as a foundation for the Minimum Wage Review Committee in determining a revised wage structure for workers.

Addressing Misinformation on Wage Increase

Contrary to misinformation circulating, the government is not considering a 100% pay raise for workers. The focus is on revising the minimum wage, not doubling every individual’s salary.

It is essential to exercise patience and await the conclusions of the Minimum Wage Review Committee as negotiations between federal and state governments progress.

Spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale, stated, “There is a consensus that an upward review of the national minimum wage is necessary.”

Minimum Wage Progression and Relief Efforts

Former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Minimum Wage Bill of N30,000 on April 18, 2019. While some states have yet to implement this increase, others, including Imo, have raised the minimum wage to N40,000.

In response to concerns about the withdrawal of petrol subsidies, Ngelale reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to the relief measures outlined for Nigerians. These measures include financial support for the manufacturing sector and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs).

President Tinubu emphasized ongoing discussions with labor unions for an upward review of salaries. Once terms are agreed upon, budgetary provisions will be made to accommodate the wage adjustment.

Labor's Demand for Wage Increase

Amid the withdrawal of petrol subsidies, labor unions have requested salary raises, with some chapters proposing a figure as high as N200,000.

Overall, the discussions between the Federal Government, states, and labor unions seek to find a balanced approach to addressing wage concerns while taking into account economic realities and the need for sustainable relief measures.
