Adamawa State, Nigeria – In a tragic incident, Captain Bitrus Sini, a senior army officer, lost his life during an altercation with a female soldier enforcing a curfew imposed by the Adamawa State government. The incident took place at a checkpoint in Yola, the state capital.
The female soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru Okonkwo, had ordered motorists to turn back during the curfew, but some individuals explained that they were essential workers. Despite their explanation, Nkiru remained firm in her decision, leading to a confrontation.
Captain Bitrus Sini intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation. Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, Nkiru accidentally discharged her weapon, fatally wounding Captain Sini. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yola, where he was pronounced dead.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri had imposed the curfew in response to recent incidents of looting and vandalism, including the theft of essential supplies intended to support those affected by the fuel subsidy reduction.
Nkiru Okonkwo was apprehended by fellow soldiers who arrived at the scene. The incident has shocked the local community, as Captain Sini was described as a gentle and well-respected officer who had recently gotten married in December of the previous year.
