Stop Taking Complaints Against Police To Social Media, IGP Warns Nigerians

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, emphasized in Ibadan that complaints against police officers should not be directed to social media.

During a stakeholders’ meeting at the Oyo Police Command headquarters, Mr. Egbetokun urged those present to utilize proper channels, as he highlighted that “There are numerous falsehoods circulating on social media.”

Attending the meeting were representatives from traditional and religious leaders, along with the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII).

Also in attendance were leaders from the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), as well as members of the Igbo and Hausa communities.

The IGP stressed that Nigerians should report any grievances against police officers to commissioners of police or other senior officers capable of ensuring justice.

“Rather than resorting to social media, if you have a complaint against the police, approach the state’s commissioners of police,” urged Mr. Egbetokun.

He acknowledged that some officers may behave improperly, but he assured that not all of them would do so, and advocated for reporting to CPs or superior officers who would address the issues.

Mr. Egbetokun outlined his vision for the police force, focusing on professionalism, service orientation, adherence to laws, and a positive relationship with the public.

He aspired to build a police force that can effectively respond to evolving crime trends, allowing citizens to feel safe.

“We intend to implement community policing, tailoring our approach to the unique aspects of each community by collaborating with other security agencies and state-owned security groups to combat and minimize crime,” explained the acting IGP.

He called upon all stakeholders to work together to achieve these goals and create a safer society.

Ibrahim Olaniyan, the national chairman of PCRC, expressed the committee’s commitment to supporting the IGP’s community policing strategy.

Similarly, Niyi Ajewole, the chairman of CCII, acknowledged the positive results seen since Mr. Egbetokun assumed the role of acting I-G in Oyo State and across Nigeria.

The IGP was joined by Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Sylvester Alabi, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Force’s Zone II, Yomi Oladimeji.

Also present were Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Adebola Hamzat, and various other officials.
