President Bola Tinubu has committed to addressing the issue of judicial remuneration review in order to combat corruption during his administration.
During a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by Barrister Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), at the presidential villa in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu assured that his government would conduct a comprehensive review of the remuneration templates for judicial officers in the country.
In a statement released on Friday by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Tinubu emphasized that the fight against corruption requires a thorough evaluation of the salaries and allowances of judicial officers. This topic holds particular significance for him due to his successful efforts in reforming justice administration in Lagos State.
Tinubu stated, “If we genuinely want to combat corruption within the Judiciary, we must address the issue of remuneration through a meticulous review, considering both its costs and consequences.” This statement was made in response to a request put forward by the NBA president.
Acknowledging the significance of filling the current vacancies within the Supreme Court, Tinubu affirmed that these vacancies carry the responsibility of being fulfilled based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council (NJC).
He stated, “The majority of them are currently on vacation, but upon their return, we will assess the situation and proceed to fill these vacancies. This is a commitment we hold as an obligation.”
Expressing gratitude for being invited to inaugurate the association’s 63rd Annual General Conference in Abuja over the weekend, Tinubu acknowledged the privilege he holds in having numerous lawyers in key advisory roles, including Chief of Staff Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, State Chief of Protocol Amb. Victor Adeleke, and Principal Private Secretary Prince Damilotun Aderemi.
The NBA President also praised President Tinubu for appointing distinguished members of the legal community to his cabinet, including Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
