Cattle Sellers Decry Significant Sales Decline After Subsidy Removal

Alhaji Sadiq Ibrahim, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Bauchi State, has expressed deep concern over the dramatic decrease in cattle sales since the removal of fuel subsidies.

As reported by NAN, Ibrahim shared his observations on Thursday in Bauchi, highlighting the adverse impact on cattle supply in the daily and weekly livestock markets throughout the state.

According to Ibrahim, cattle-related businesses have seen a sharp decline of up to 70 percent since the introduction of the fuel subsidy removal policy.

He pointed out that cattle sellers are now struggling to make even four sales per day, down significantly from their previous average of 40.

Ibrahim also emphasized that due to the prevailing economic challenges, people are prioritizing essential food items for their survival over meat purchases.

He stated, “The buying and selling activities in cattle markets have plummeted by approximately 70 percent, and the business landscape has undergone a stark transformation.

Prior to the fuel subsidy removal, daily markets used to feature no less than 30 to 40 cows, but nowadays, one can hardly find more than 4 to 5 cows.”

It’s important to note that Nigerians have adjusted their consumption habits in response to the fuel subsidy removal implemented in June.
