Nigeria Requires ₦21 Trillion To Build 28 Million Houses – VP Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has emphasized that Nigeria needs N21 trillion to tackle the daunting task of constructing 28 million houses in order to bridge the country’s severe housing deficit, despite concerted efforts by all three tiers of government.

Shettima made this assertion on Sunday in Sokoto during the groundbreaking ceremony for a 500-unit housing estate project initiated by the Sokoto government.

Mr. Shettima expressed his commendation for Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s dedication to addressing the housing needs of the people of Sokoto, recognizing that the housing shortfall in Nigeria remains a substantial challenge.

“Nigeria is grappling with a housing deficit of 28 million units, and to fulfill this crucial need, we must secure N21 trillion in funding.

The governor’s proactive approach is highly praiseworthy and sets an example for other state governments. It’s noteworthy that the governor has prioritized infrastructure projects such as roads and flyovers since taking office,” noted Mr. Shettima.

Governor Aliyu elucidated that the housing estate would primarily cater to civil servants, with the intention of selling the completed units to them on an owner-occupier basis.

Mr. Aliyu remarked, “This project was initially initiated by the former governor of the state, Aliyu Wamakko, but was later abandoned during the previous administration. Nevertheless, we are committed to its completion for the benefit of our public servants and the general public.”

The Sokoto governor revealed that the project, located in Wamakko Local Government Area of the state, will incur a total cost of N7.3 billion for the state government.

This event, which also commemorated the administration’s first 100 days in office, saw the presence of Aliyu Wamakko and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, alongside other dignitaries such as the Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo, and former Deputy Governors Mukhtari Shagari and Chiso Abdullahi-Dattijo, among others.
