FG To Grant Universities With Autonomy – Minister

Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, has expressed the government’s firm commitment to revolutionize funding for higher education by granting universities the autonomy to explore innovative financing avenues.

This declaration was made in Abuja during the Nigeria’s Annual Education Conference (NAEC), themed ‘Implementation of Education 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Nigeria.’

The conference is set to deliberate on various evolving educational trends, including university autonomy, the Students Loans Fund, and education financing. These themes align seamlessly with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the education sector.

Furthermore, Prof. Mamman emphasized that the conference’s theme would remain pertinent until Nigeria achieves 100 percent of the targets established in the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the education-related objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2060.

“As a signatory to both SDG 2030 and AU Agenda 2060, Nigeria must continually exhibit its unwavering dedication to accomplishing these objectives by taking the lead and taking ownership of the implementation process. The education sector is a pivotal component, ensuring that national planning and budgeting adhere to the SDGs framework,” he remarked.

The minister added, “In the proposition and development of implementation strategies, it is crucial to incorporate mechanisms for ongoing monitoring and evaluation to guarantee the attainment of these goals.”
