National Grid Experiences Yet Another Collapse, Plunging Nigeria into Darkness

Nigeria finds itself in the midst of a power crisis once more as the national grid, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from Osogbo in Osun State, has collapsed.

Early this morning, as confirmed by The Spectacles, The Guardian conducted a check revealing that the grid’s capacity had plummeted to a mere 273 megawatts, sourced from just two out of the more than 27 electricity generation facilities.

This occurrence is particularly concerning as it follows closely on the heels of TCN’s celebration of 400 days of what many consider to be questionable grid stability, just a week ago.

Several Distribution Companies have confirmed to The Guardian that the grid failure occurred at 00:41 AM, resulting in most of their feeders going offline.

As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, only five generating plants were actively contributing to the grid. Afam VI was generating 0.70MW, Dadinkowa registered zero generation, Ibom Power supplied 32.90MW, Jebba contributed 240MW, while Olorunsogo was operational but not generating any power.

Around 1 AM, the total grid power was a mere 35MW, indicating a severe nationwide power outage. At approximately 3 AM, the grid capacity dipped even further to 193MW before recovering slightly to 273MW at the time of this report’s filing.

It is worth noting that the TCN has yet to respond to inquiries from our correspondent regarding this developing situation.
