The Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Alkali, has announced the prioritization of the presidential approval for an upward review of special allowances for Nigerian railway workers. This move is aimed at enhancing the welfare of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) staff and improving their overall effectiveness and working conditions.
Minister Alkali made this announcement during his visit to the NRC’s headquarters in Ebute-Meta, Lagos. The purpose of the visit was to assess and evaluate the corporation’s performance, particularly in terms of managerial coordination and the implementation of existing rail infrastructure and ongoing projects. Special attention was given to projects like the Lagos-Ibadan and Kano-Maradi railway modernization.
The minister assured the NRC’s management of the full support of the Ministry of Transportation in fulfilling its statutory functions comprehensively. Emphasizing the vital role of transportation in driving economic growth worldwide, Senator Alkali pledged to expedite the completion of the Bola Tinubu Station of the Standard Gauge rail in the near future.
Earlier, the Managing Director of NRC, Fidet Okhiria, extended congratulations to Minister Alkali on behalf of the entire staff for his appointment. He highlighted the challenges faced by the NRC, including security threats and vandalism of critical infrastructure.
