The Government of Togo has granted permission to the United Nations to utilize its ports for delivering relief supplies to the people of the Republic of Niger, following a request made by the United Nations, as reported by The Spectacles.
In recent days, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations responsible for humanitarian operations presented the necessity of easing sanctions imposed on Niger after a coup to the West African Organization of ECOWAS (CEDEAO). This move would facilitate the delivery of aid to the public.
In his communication to ECOWAS, the United Nations official emphasized that the sanctions imposed by the organization on Niger are significantly impacting vulnerable populations. Therefore, the actions taken by member countries following the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum’s government should not obstruct the provision of aid to those in need.
In response to the United Nations’ concerns, ECOWAS engaged with its member countries to gather their perspectives. After being contacted, the government of Togo, represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, communicated its approval for relief goods destined for Niger to transit through the country’s ports.
Furthermore, in addition to Togo, the West African Union has similarly extended an offer to the Republic of Benin, allowing the use of its ports and borders for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Niger.
