A rescue operation is now underway to liberate the abducted students of the Federal University Zamfara State. Operatives from the joint task force, Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD), successfully intercepted the abductors of the female students.
Reportedly, suspected bandits invaded the hostels of the Federal University, Gusau (FUG) in the early hours of Friday, kidnapping 23 students, primarily females.
The OPHD troops, in their relentless pursuit of the kidnappers, tracked them into a dense forest, engaging them in a firefight with support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
According to sources within the military, six of the abducted students have been successfully rescued thus far. Additionally, several bandits have been neutralized, and a cache of rifles, motorcycles, and other items has been recovered.
This daring rescue operation was prompted by the abduction of students from their rented hostels in Sabon Gida village, Gusau.
Earlier, Brigadier General S. Ahmed, Commander of the 1st Brigade Nigerian Army in Gusau and head of Operation Hadarin Daji in Zamfara and Kebbi states, led troops in pursuit of the bandits’ exit route.
Local residents residing near the forest have reported the presence of fighter jets in the area, accompanied by intense sounds of gunfire and explosions, suggesting a fierce confrontation is taking place.
