NANS To Relocate Secretariat To FUG Until Abducted Colleagues Are Freed

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) strongly condemns the abduction of undergraduate students at Federal University Gusau, located in Zamfara State within the North-West region.

In a display of unwavering solidarity, NANS is actively considering the relocation of our National Secretariat to Federal University Gusau until all the kidnapped students are safely returned to campus.

Numerous news outlets have reported the harrowing incident in which armed individuals invaded the Sabon-Gida student residence, primarily targeting female students of Federal University Gusau, identified as Nazeer Sabon-Gida. These assailants abducted several students.

Following this distressing event, the Nigerian Army announced a successful rescue operation, freeing six of the kidnapped students after a fierce gun battle with the terrorists.

In response to these developments, student leaders are contemplating the relocation of their national secretariat to Gusau until the remaining kidnapped students are also rescued.

The official statement partly reads:

“National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Condemns Kidnapping of Students at Federal University Gusau.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) stands united in condemning the heinous kidnapping of Nigerian students at the Federal University Gusau. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the university’s management during this challenging time.

“We commend the swift response and efforts of the Nigerian military which led to the immediate rescue of 8 students. However, we urgently call upon them to intensify their actions and tirelessly pursue the criminals responsible for this heinous act until all the remaining students are safely rescued from captivity.

“In a show of solidarity, we are considering relocating our National Secretariat to the Federal University Gusau until all the kidnapped students are returned to campus, alive and unharmed. We believe that such a symbolic move will emphasize the urgency and importance of ensuring the safety of our students in the face of these threats.

“We also call upon the federal government to take decisive action to guarantee the security and safety of Nigerian students, both on campus and off-campus. The continued attacks on our tertiary institutions pose a significant threat to our nation’s developmental agenda for educational growth, and it is imperative that we address this issue promptly and effectively.

“NANS remains committed to the welfare and safety of Nigerian students, and we will continue to engage with relevant authorities to ensure that our institutions of learning remain safe spaces for our future leaders.”
