The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mali, Abdoulaye Diop, issued a stern warning against the use of military force on the Republic of Niger following the recent military coup.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Mali’s top diplomat emphasized the importance of their security agreement with Niger, pledging support in the face of any attack.
Last week, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso solidified a security pact, united by their shared experience of military rule.
Niger became the latest West African nation to undergo a coup, with the ousting of President Bazoum Mohamed on July 26.
Abdoulaye Diop vehemently criticized any attempts by ECOWAS or other entities to employ military force against Niger.
He asserted that Mali could not trust any such plans and considered them a threat to regional peace and security. He expressed Mali’s unwavering commitment to prevent foreign military intervention in Niger.
Additionally, the Russian Foreign Minister commended Russia’s support for the Sahel region in its struggle against security challenges. The speech also saw strong criticism of France and its allies for their involvement in the region.
