The Federal Government stands firm in its commitment to preventing a nationwide labor strike, despite prior declarations by labor unions.
Recent reports have revealed that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have reached a consensus to initiate a nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands.
Nevertheless, the government has disclosed that Bola Tinubu will unveil a comprehensive support package for workers during the customary presidential address commemorating Nigeria’s Independence Day.
Olajide Oshundun, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor, emphasized that a meeting scheduled for Tuesday will focus on President Tinubu’s announcements during his Independence Day speech on October 1.
Oshundun stated, “We are determined to avert the strike. We are aware of their intentions to strike, and we want to assure them that President Tinubu will address the concerns of Nigerian workers in his October 1 speech.”
He continued, “The ministry is actively working towards meeting the second aspect of their demands, which primarily revolves around wage adjustments. We have already secured the release of the NURTW factional chairman. Therefore, we intend to invite the labor unions on Tuesday to discuss the reasons for calling off the strike following the President’s pronouncement.”
