Coup: Jonathan Urges Africa to Reimagine Democracy Amidst Growing Challenges

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced concerns over the recent wave of civil government overthrows across Africa, calling for a reevaluation and redirection of democracy on the continent. Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue 2023 event organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, he highlighted the growing challenges faced by democracy in Africa, such as poverty and unemployment, which have eroded trust among citizens.

Jonathan emphasized that leadership should prioritize translating democracy into economic well-being and fostering development. He expressed dismay at the jubilation witnessed when civilian administrations were overthrown by the military, noting that such celebrations were short-lived and underscored the need for a revitalized democratic system in Africa.

He urged leaders to uphold the rule of law, respect people’s rights, strengthen public institutions, and implement policies that positively impact the lives of the population. His Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse, the Olu of Warri, echoed the importance of governing with the people’s interests in mind.

Furthermore, he highlighted the need for Africa to demonstrate excellence on the global stage and lamented the lack of a black nation that had achieved this recognition.

The event featured a keynote address by Prof Patrick Lumumba on “Making Democracy Work in Africa” and drew the participation of other influential African leaders, including Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.
