Wage Award: NLC Begins Negotiations With Jigawa State Govt

In the wake of the nationwide strike suspension by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the NLC’s Jigawa State chapter has commenced negotiations with the state government to address their demands, which notably include a six-month wage award.

Comrade Sanusi Alhassan Maigatari, the state chairman of the NLC, shared this development while speaking to reporters regarding the progress achieved in the negotiation process.

He expressed satisfaction with the commitment shown by the Jigawa State government during the negotiations, indicating optimism about achieving fruitful outcomes that will enhance the well-being of civil servants in the state.

Maigatari stated, “The state delegation, led by the Head of Civil Service, has exhibited maturity and a genuine concern in these discussions. On our part, we are fully prepared to facilitate meaningful progress.”

He clarified that their demands encompass the payment of a six-month wage award, the provision of soft loans and relief measures for the state’s workers.

“We have also urged the state government to introduce a public mass transit program, aimed at providing affordable transportation options, thereby alleviating the financial burden on both workers and the general public resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies,” Maigatari added.

The NLC chairman emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidies has placed workers in dire circumstances, with the cost of goods and food items surging by over 50 percent while salaries remain stagnant.
