Chimamanda Introduces Obi As Winner Of Nigeria’s Presidential Election During Lecture At U.S. University

Following the February and March 2023 elections in Nigeria and the subsequent disputes, Adichie wrote an open letter to President Biden, highlighting the irregularities in the polls.

Chimamanda Adichie expressed her anger and disappointment with how Nigeria conducted the 2023 elections during her Inaugural Africa World Lecture at Princeton University in the United States.

“I felt compelled to narrate the events,” she explained. “In a world so willing to deny and distort recent history, it is crucial to share the truth.”

After the February and March 2023 elections in Nigeria and the ensuing controversies, Adichie composed an open letter to President Biden, shedding light on the election’s irregularities.

“I penned it as a testament,” said the author of ‘Half of A Yellow Sun.’

During Adichie’s lecture, she introduced Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to the audience as the victor of the presidential election.

Her lecture delved into her writing career, the driving forces behind her literary works, and their global reception. Adichie discussed the influence of the church, especially the Catholic Church, on her work, particularly her first novel, “Purple Hibiscus.”

She recounted her longstanding connection with the church.

Regarding her sources of inspiration, she mentioned that her family believed she embodied her great-grandmother, who was known for her strength and as a troublemaker in her time.

The renowned author of the award-winning novel “Americanah” delivered the inaugural lecture at Richardson Auditorium.

The Africa World Initiative, led by Prof. Chika Okeke-Agulu, and the Program in African Studies at Princeton initiated the annual lecture series to showcase prominent African voices to the world. The next year’s lecture will be delivered by Abdulrazak Gurnah, Africa’s 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate.
