Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who represented the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 presidential election, has voiced his concerns about the recent Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Bola Tinubu as President. During a world press conference in Abuja on Monday, Atiku made it clear that Nigeria is the one who will suffer the most from this ruling, not him.
In the wake of their election defeat, Atiku and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, took the matter to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Unfortunately, their petitions were dismissed on the grounds of being “unmeritorious.” The duo appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, but their appeals were also deemed lacking in merit and were subsequently dismissed.
Speaking for the first time after the Supreme Court’s ruling, Atiku expressed his thoughts during the press conference. He stated, “Someone asked me what I would do if I lost my election petition appeal at the Supreme Court. In response, I said that as long as Nigeria wins, the struggle would have been worth it. By that, I meant that the bigger loss would not be mine but Nigeria’s if the Supreme Court legitimizes illegality, including forgery, identity theft, and perjury.”
He went on to discuss the potential consequences of such a ruling on the country’s democracy and electoral politics, emphasizing that it might extend beyond the current government’s term and impact the nation for decades to come. He concluded by expressing his belief that history will ultimately vindicate his stance.
