The National Union of Zamfara State Students (NUZAMSS) held its inaugural national unity congress on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the MH3 lecture hall in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
This gathering brought together members of the union from various educational institutions at the local, state, and national levels to discuss critical issues related to the union and the students of Zamfara.
During the congress, Comrade Sani Isma’il (Algusawy), the National President of the union, spoke about the congress’s purpose, emphasizing the importance of reuniting members from different higher learning institutions across the country. He also highlighted some of the achievements of the current union administration.
Algusawy stated, “This is a pre-convention congress in preparation for our 2023 national convention, in line with our mission to unite all Zamfara State students under a single umbrella, regardless of their tribe, sex, or location.”
One of their notable accomplishments in their administration was a meeting with the former governor of the state, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, regarding scholarships. While the former governor promised to address the issue, he couldn’t do so due to his election loss. They remain optimistic that the present governor, Dauda Lawal, will address this matter.
The union successfully amended its constitution and redesigned its logo, reflecting the state’s pride in farming, mineral resources, and education. Algusawy called on members to support and cooperate for the development of the union and the state, emphasizing that the future of both depends on their efforts, as the government may not assist them without their active involvement.
Misbahu Abubakar, a native of Talata-Mafara local government who came from the College of Legal and Arabic Studies in Wamakko, expressed his excitement about the congress, as it provided an opportunity to reconnect with old acquaintances. He believed this gathering would strengthen the unity and solidarity of the association.
Key highlights of the event included the unveiling of the newly redesigned union logo, a review and adoption of the union constitution, and a two-minute prayer in memory of the late Comrade Abba Bala Haruna, an executive member of the union who passed away several months ago.
