Religious Scholars Reduced To Begging In Front Of Politicians – Rafsanjani

Rafsanjani, the Director General of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC), has expressed concern over the actions of many religious scholars who, in his view, have resorted to seeking favor from political leaders, thereby compromising their integrity.

During an interview on a Channels television breakfast program, Rafsanjani emphasized the importance of communities and religious leaders upholding justice and being beacons of truth in the world. He lamented that some scholars have essentially become “beggars” for politicians.

He reflected on the past when ancestors courageously stood up for the truth, fearlessly addressing governors, ministers, local government heads, directors, or presidents in a respectful manner to point out mistakes. However, he noted that this tradition seems to have eroded.

Rafsanjani raised the question of who is now holding leaders accountable, either privately or publicly, for their actions. He pointed out the disheartening trend of religious leaders rushing to political figures when called upon, rather than political leaders seeking counsel from the community or religious leaders as was done in the past.

He expressed concern that this situation diminishes the integrity and influence that these religious scholars should have, and it hinders their ability to exercise caution when leaders make wrong decisions.

Rafsanjani also criticized Nigerian leaders for seemingly abandoning the pursuit of justice in favor of materialism, which has eroded the integrity of the entire system.

According to him, instead of condemning the actions of political leaders, many religious scholars remain silent and encourage their followers to pray for those who oppress them, stifling the voices of truth-tellers. He highlighted the challenge of individuals with the capacity to speak the truth being silenced or discouraged.

In conclusion, Rafsanjani underscored the significant challenge faced by Nigeria, where even religious teachers who are expected to speak truth are at times reluctant to do so, aligning themselves with politicians rather than serving as impartial voices of guidance and wisdom.
