Amidst a tumultuous situation in the state Assembly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State refuted an alleged threat of impeachment. The crisis within the state Assembly led to chaotic scenes with lawmakers fleeing for safety as police officers deployed teargas outside the assembly complex in Port Harcourt.
In a surprising move, the Peoples Democratic Party-controlled House of Assembly removed its Leader, Edison Ehie, who was reportedly aligned with Governor Fubara. The majority of lawmakers are said to have endorsed an impeachment notice against the governor.
Governor Fubara addressed his supporters at the assembly complex, stating, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offense I have committed to warrant any impeachment. Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press.”
Amid these political upheavals, rumors circulate about a potential rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Despite the speculations and odds, it was Nyesom Wike who supported Mr. Fubara, the former accountant general of the state, to succeed him as Rivers governor. Mr. Fubara’s swift ascent into active politics began when he contested and won the March 2023 governorship election in the state.
