Reps Summons Betta Edu Over FG’s Cash Transfer Programme

The House of Representatives has issued a summons to Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The purpose of this summons is to have her provide a briefing to the green chamber regarding the Federal Government’s conditional cash transfer programme, which aims to benefit 15 million households.

In a motion of urgent public importance on Tuesday, the House expressed concerns about the management of the programme, particularly regarding its transparency and the presence of fraudulent practices.

The House has requested the minister to provide specific information about the data collection process and the distribution of funds.

In mid-October, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer for 15 million households. This initiative was initially announced by the President in his Independence Day broadcast to Nigerians on October 1, 2023, and is intended to support vulnerable citizens.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs had previously stated that the 15 million households encompass approximately 62 million Nigerians. She also clarified that each beneficiary would receive ₦25,000 per month for a three-month period, totaling ₦75,000 for each beneficiary.
