Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri with his right eye completely swollen shut.
Comrade Benson Upah, the NLC Head of Information and Publicity, described the incident as an act of abduction that escalated into an attempted murder.
He stated, “Contact was established with Congress President Comrade Joe Ajaero this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri, from where he was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri to receive medical attention. His right eye was severely swollen at the time of contact.”
Upah went on to explain, “Ajaero, who could say very little, recounted that shortly after his arrest, he was physically assaulted, blindfolded, and taken to an undisclosed location where further brutalization occurred, sometimes involving the use of bottles. His phones, money, and personal belongings were confiscated and have not been returned to him.”
