In an effort to make education more accessible for underprivileged children, the Kano State Government has officially endorsed a 50% reduction in tuition fees for all state-owned tertiary institutions.
Governor Abba Yusuf made this announcement on Friday during the departure of the third batch of 250 first-class students from the state who are embarking on their postgraduate studies in India as part of the “One Thousand and One” scholarship scheme recently initiated by the state government.
The primary goal of the state government’s initiative to provide foreign scholarships to its first-class indigenous graduates is to enhance their skills and transform them into global citizens.
Among the excited students is Aisha Lamido, a medical doctor, who is thrilled about pursuing her postgraduate studies in clinical research in India. On the other hand, Amina Yunisa, a pharmacist, is not as enthusiastic, as she’ll be leaving her family behind in Nigeria.
Despite the mixed emotions expressed by the students, Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, emphasized that as an additional 250 scholars leave Nigeria for their studies, his administration has also lowered the tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions to encourage greater enrollment.
Political appointees in Governor Yusuf’s administration believe that the Kwankwasiya leadership model offers hope for the advancement of education in Kano State.
