In a resolute and unified stance, the Oyo State chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued a fervent call to action. Workers in the state are urged to participate in a strike commencing on Monday, November 6, in response to unmet demands and the recent disturbing police assault on the NLC National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.
This solemn declaration was conveyed in a joint press statement, bearing the signatures of Comrade Kayode Martins, NLC Chairperson, and Comrade Bosun Olabiyi Agoro, TUC Chairman, and was disseminated on Friday.
The unions have castigated the state government for its failure to address a catalogue of essential demands. These demands encompass the implementation of the N35,000 minimum wage, the settlement of salary deduction arrears, and an upward revision of pensions.
Furthermore, the unions have unequivocally condemned the police assault on Comrade Ajaero, deeming it “a direct assault on the fundamental rights and liberties of the Nigerian labor force.” This shocking incident is characterized as an alarming manifestation of authoritarian tendencies displayed by certain State Governments toward the labor movement.
