Lt. General Tukur Buratai, a former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has attributed the prevailing insecurity in the country to the actions of the political class. Buratai made these remarks on Friday during a lecture titled “Public Service and the Imperatives for National Security in Nigeria,” which he delivered at the second stanza of the 2023 National Public Service Lecture and the 65th anniversary of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association.
During his speech, Buratai addressed the criticisms he faced while serving as COAS and suggested that these critiques were often driven by personal biases rather than an objective evaluation of his performance. He emphasized the importance of discussing national security issues with a fair and impartial mindset, focusing on relevant aspects rather than personal biases.
Buratai also discussed the National Assembly’s resolutions calling for the removal of service chiefs and suggested that these calls could have undermined democracy. He asserted that the country’s insecurity issues since 2009 were primarily the result of actions taken by the political class and could be overcome with strong political will.
Furthermore, he urged politicians, public servants, and civil servants to combat corruption, which has been a persistent problem in Nigeria’s political sphere, eroding public trust and hindering development. Buratai emphasized the need for accountability and transparency among politicians to build public confidence.
