The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has officially announced the redeployment of Imo State’s Commissioner of Police, Stephen Olanrewaju.
“I am aware of the allegations circulating on social media against the Commissioner of Police in Imo State. However, for this election, we have decided to replace the Commissioner of Police in Imo,” stated the IGP on Sunday during his appearance on Channels Television’s People’s Townhall on Election Security.
Widespread public outcry, including protests from Organised Labor groups such as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress, has accused Olanrewaju of possible involvement in the recent attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, last week.
Organised Labor had also issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the replacement of the police commissioner. They have also voiced their concerns, though Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking re-election, has disavowed any involvement in the attack on Ajaero.
The IGP assured the public that the police have addressed all potential threats in the three states. He added that the disarmament of unauthorized individuals will be an ongoing process, both before and after the elections.
Egbetokun emphasized the police’s commitment to responding to vote-buying and other electoral offenses in accordance with the provisions of electoral laws. He also reassured that policemen’s allowances will be paid promptly.
