Varsities Urged By Fed Govt Panels To Reclaim ₦62.9m In Salary Advances

The Whitepaper report from the Presidential Visitation Panels to federal universities in 2023 reveals that staff at Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Federal University, Wukari; and Federal University Kashere failed to retire ₦62.85m in salary advances and loans, some dating back over five years.

The report highlights similar issues at other universities, including Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and Federal University Birnin-Kebbi, though specific amounts are yet to be verified.

The panels, constituted for 38 federal universities, presented their reports in 2021, but the Whitepapers were released in 2023. The financial statements scrutiny exposed significant unremitted salary advances and staff loans.

Recommendations include eliminating delays in advance retirement at FUTO, addressing loan practices at Federal University, Birnin-Kebbi, and advising better control over salary advances at Federal University, Wukari.

The panel urges refund of loan balances at Federal University, Kashere, and retirement of ₦10,746,112.00 in cash advances at Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, some overdue for over five years.

The report emphasizes investigating reasons for prolonged cash advances, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and initiating immediate deductions from affected staff’s salaries for unretired advances.
