The Nigerian government has issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), cautioning them against proceeding with their planned strike, asserting that it would be considered contempt of court.
In a statement on Monday, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, disclosed that the government secured a restraining order from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), preventing the unions from initiating the proposed strike. The order, granted on November 10 by NICN President Justice B. B. Kanyip, has been duly served to the concerned unions.
Fagbemi emphasized the importance of respecting the court order and upholding the principles of the rule of law. He urged the unions to refrain from resorting to self-help, assuring workers that their safety is guaranteed and will be protected within the legal framework.
“We urge workers to report for duties and not to entertain any fear,” stated Fagbemi, reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
