Government Under Fire: NLC’s Shocking Allegations and Demands!

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outlined six conditions that must be met before calling off their ongoing indefinite strike, as revealed in an official statement on their X handle (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday. First on the list is the arrest and prosecution of Chinasa Nwaneri, a special adviser to the Imo governor, who allegedly led an attack on the NLC president and other workers in the state.

The union also demands the arrest, prosecution, and dismissal of police officers and thugs involved in the attack, including the Chief Security Officer in Imo State Government House, identified as SP Shaba. Additionally, the NLC calls for the investigation and prosecution of the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Ahmed Barde, for his alleged involvement in the assault on the NLC chief.

The group emphasized that their demands are rooted in the pursuit of justice. The strike, initiated by NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC), and affiliates like the Academic Staff Union of Universities, began on Tuesday, defying a court order prohibiting the industrial action. The protest was triggered by the brutalization of NLC president, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State on November 1 during an NLC protest against the alleged mistreatment of workers in the state.

The unions accuse Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma of mobilizing thugs and officers to attack Ajaero and disrupt the planned protest. Despite a restraining court order, the unions directed their members to go on strike.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu intervened in the crisis on Wednesday, urging the unions to end the strike. He announced the arrest of suspects involved in assaulting the labor leader and assured that the investigation’s outcome would be made public. The NLC leadership appreciated the NSA’s intervention, condemning the assault as a violation of the rule of law and principles of freedom of association and expression.
