Labour Party Welcomes Atiku’s Merger Proposal; NNPP Sets Conditions

The Labour Party has expressed support for the merger proposal put forth by Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), considering it a positive step. In contrast, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has attached a condition to its acceptance of the proposal.

Atiku, during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria on Tuesday, urged opposition parties to unite and challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In response, the Labour Party’s acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described Atiku’s call as a commendable proposition towards dismantling the ruling party’s influence. He emphasized the need for a genuine democracy in Nigeria and welcomed any initiative that aligns with that goal.

However, the NNPP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Yakubu Shendam, characterized Atiku’s call as emotional and belated. The NNPP expressed a willingness to consider a merger only if it includes support for Rabiu Kwankwaso’s presidential bid in 2027. Shendam highlighted their confidence in Kwankwaso’s capability to lead the country independently.

The ruling APC responded dismissively to Atiku’s call, asserting that they felt neither moved nor threatened by it. Bala Ibrahim, the APC Publicity Director, downplayed Atiku’s influence, citing legal and public opinion setbacks. Ibrahim emphasized the APC’s perceived dominance and progressiveness in Nigerian politics.

The political landscape appears to be gearing up for potential collaborations and shifts, with varying reactions from different parties to Atiku’s merger proposal.
