EU To Intervene in Education For Students in Kano, Sokoto And Jigawa

Kano State has been chosen as a primary beneficiary of the European Union-funded education and empowerment program in Nigeria, focusing on enhancing safe, inclusive learning opportunities for girls and boys in Kano, Jigawa, and Sokoto states.

The four-year initiative, running from September 2023 to August 2027, will impact 10 LGAs in each state, benefiting approximately 1.2 million learners, 5,000 teachers, 150 education officials, and 5,400 community members.

The program, structured around strengthened education governance and learning, expanded access to inclusive learning environments, and the promotion of quality continuous learning, aims to address the evolving educational landscape, emphasizing digital training for both teachers and learners.

The delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund, led by Mr. Michael Banda, highlighted the importance of community involvement and proposed empowering education committees to enhance the standard of education.

While acknowledging potential challenges, particularly in data assessment, Banda emphasized the necessity of teacher management information data.

The State Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, expressed gratitude for Kano’s selection and pledged full government support, including funding for a comprehensive census of teachers. He also commended the program’s allocation for Arabic school development and skills acquisition, considering it a positive initiative.
