Malaria Initiative: Zamfara Govt Set To Distribute 3.2 Million Mosquito Nets

In collaboration with development partners, the Zamfara State government has finalized plans for the distribution of 3.2 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets in the state.

Faruk Mohammed Lawal, a representative of “Breakthrough Action Nigeria,” leading a team focused on malaria advocacy, communication, and social mobilization, shared this information during a visit to the correspondent chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Zamfara State Council, on Tuesday.

Lawal emphasized that this marks the third campaign against malaria in the state, aiming to eliminate the threat. Over this period, a total of 3.2 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets will be distributed across the state’s local government areas.

“To combat malaria and reduce its risk, the use of treated nets is crucial in preventing mosquito bites,” Lawal explained.

Highlighting Zamfara’s high malaria prevalence rate, Lawal disclosed that the distribution effort is a crucial step in addressing this public health challenge.

Linda Osaji, representing Breakthrough Action Nigeria, added that 12,000 ad hoc staff have been recruited for the net card distribution throughout the state. The distribution, allowing access to treated mosquito nets, is set to commence on December 1st.

Osaji urged the public to use the nets as intended, emphasizing their purpose to shield against mosquito bites, the primary cause of malaria. “These nets are not for fishing; use them to protect yourself from malaria,” she advised.

Kabiru Danja Kurya, the chairman of the subcommittee and state health educator, acknowledged the vital role journalists play in health issues, crediting their support for the state’s achievements in various health sectors.

In response, Sani Haruna Dutsinma, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondent Chapel in Zamfara State, assured the committee of journalists’ continued support whenever needed.
