In a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) welcomed the proposal put forth by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggesting the merger of opposition parties as a strategic move to counter the influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
Acting National Chairman of the NNPP, Abba Ali, expressed the party’s endorsement of Atiku Abubakar’s call, emphasizing its patriotic nature and considering it a crucial step in safeguarding democracy against the perceived drift towards a one-party state by the APC.
Ali stated, “The NNPP views Atiku Abubakar’s call for a merger of opposition parties as a commendable and welcome development, and we unreservedly commend him for his patriotic stance.”
The Acting National Chairman reiterated the party’s firm support for this initiative while emphasizing a broader perspective, taking into account various factors associated with the proposed merger. He concluded, “The NNPP sees this proposal as a necessary and applaudable step, and we remain committed to its success.”
