Late last night and into the early hours of today, a violent clash unfolded at the Nigeria Police Headquarters in Yola, Adamawa, resulting in the tragic death of Inspector Jacob Daniel as soldiers in 12 trucks attacked the facility. The Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola, condemned the assault, urging heightened vigilance among officers.
In a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, CP Afolabi Babatola strongly denounced the conflict between police and military officers at Target Junction, Yola North Local Government Area. The incident led to an exchange of gunfire, brutal attacks on the police facility, and the unfortunate killing of Inspector Jacob Daniel. An immediate investigation has been ordered by the CP to ensure justice and restore peace.
Warning against any further attacks on security personnel, CP Afolabi Babatola emphasized the sanctity of all security officers’ lives. He asserted that such conflicts would be rigorously addressed within the framework of existing laws. The CP reiterated the commitment of the command to safeguarding lives and property, highlighting the importance of collaboration with sister security agencies to protect the fundamental rights of security operatives.
The police boss appealed for calm, assuring the public that both security agencies’ top management is actively addressing the situation through legal means. Brigadier General Gambo Mohammed, the Brigade Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade, stated that one of his men was shot by the police, prompting a rescue mission. However, a senior police officer refuted this claim, stating that the injured army officer, who was in mufti during the attack, is receiving treatment at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital Yola and was not hidden, as alleged by the military.
