The Federal Government announced on Thursday its plans to implement a new minimum wage system, slated to take effect from April 1, 2024. Speaking on behalf of the government, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, clarified that the existing N30,000 minimum wage would cease at the close of March 2024.
“Idris Mohammed emphasized the forthcoming introduction of a revised wage framework starting from April 1, 2024. He underscored the purpose of earlier introduced palliatives, aimed at alleviating economic hardships in the interim. Acknowledging the complexity of the wage issue, Mohammed highlighted ongoing negotiations with labor representatives. He stressed the collaborative formation of a committee, inclusive of labor stakeholders, entrusted with addressing the wage structure.
“Expressing optimism, Mohammed stated, ‘As the current wage structure reaches its conclusion by March’s end, we anticipate the initiation of a new wage system come April. This envisioned framework seeks to establish a comprehensive salary arrangement benefiting workers nationwide.’ He also urged private sector entities and state governors to align with this upcoming wage structure for the welfare of employees across Nigeria.
