Two hundred private legal practitioners hailing from the 19 northern states have stepped forward to offer their services in support of Governor Kabir Yusuf’s pursuit to overturn the verdict of his gubernatorial election appeal at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Speaking collectively under the banner of the ‘Abba Kabir Yusuf Volunteer Lawyers Forum For The 19 – Northern States And Abuja,’ these attorneys made their intentions clear during a press briefing held at Arewa House in Kaduna on Sunday.
Addressing the assembly, spokesperson Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim urged President Bola Tinubu and the Supreme Court to safeguard Nigeria from becoming a one-party state, citing concerns about the potential erosion of democratic practices. The lawyers articulated their apprehension regarding the judiciary’s independence, emphasizing the paramount importance of upholding the rule of law to ensure the sanctity of every Nigerian’s vote in elections. Expressing solidarity with Governor Yusuf, they vehemently opposed the Appeal Court’s ruling in favor of the APC, labeling it a glaring miscarriage of justice.
Ibrahim further asserted their commitment as private legal practitioners to engage in litigation in support of Governor Yusuf’s cause at the Supreme Court. He reiterated their mission to represent truth in reclaiming the mandate of the people of Kano State. Additionally, the group called for a comprehensive overhaul of the Electoral Act to address systemic anomalies within the judicial system and safeguard democracy.
Highlighting concerns regarding pre-election matters and court rulings that declare winners, the lawyers urged for cautious handling, recommending potential re-runs in affected areas rather than hasty conclusions. They emphasized the risk of disenfranchisement if unchecked trends continue, potentially undermining the electorate’s ability to influence election outcomes.
The collective also urged the Supreme Court to maintain its independence, resist external influences, and ensure judicious and impartial handling of judgments. Expressing hope in the apex court’s ability to make decisions devoid of bias, they criticized the Appeal Court’s recent judgment. This collective effort of legal volunteers signifies a determined stance to address perceived injustices and uphold the democratic principles governing Nigeria’s electoral processes.
