Fed Govt Allocates ₦138m To Address Fake News And Print Calendars

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, plans to allocate ₦138,066,187 from the 2024 Appropriation Bill to combat fake news and print calendars. Part of this budget will be utilized for media appearances by ministers, engaging with social media influencers, and other related activities.

Initiated by former Minister Lai Mohammed during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the advocacy against fake news addresses the shift from ordinary to “deep” fake news, perceived as a tool used against the government. Mohammed emphasized that reputable publications and mainstream media have unfortunately joined in spreading deep fake news, and citizens found guilty would face sanctions.

In the 2024 budget breakdown, ₦24.5m is earmarked for a special enlightenment campaign focusing on government programs, policies, and testimonial series gauging their impact. Additionally, ₦40m is allocated for calendar production, ₦30m for external publicity and engagement with foreign media, and ₦20.7m for media interactions by ministers, influencers, and analysts across print and social media.

The government also plans to spend ₦21.7m on the development of social media platforms and networking with other platforms. President Bola Tinubu submitted the 2024 appropriation budget to the National Assembly last week.
