The National Judicial Council (NJC) has put forth the names of 11 Court of Appeal justices for elevation to the esteemed Supreme Court bench. As announced by Soji Oye, the Director of Information for the apex court, this recommendation emerged during the council’s 104th meeting held in Abuja.
Pending President Bola Tinubu’s approval and subsequent confirmation by the Senate, these recommended candidates will take their oaths to serve on the Supreme Court bench. This move will bring the apex court’s total justices to the constitutionally mandated 21.
The recommended justices for the Supreme Court include notable legal figures such as Hon. Justice Jummai Hannatu Sankey, OFR, Hon. Justice Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa, Hon. Justice Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme, Hon. Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, and more, listed in full.
In addition to the elevation to the Supreme Court, the NJC’s year-end meeting also proposed the appointment of Justice Mohammed Ramat to the Court of Appeal, along with the endorsement of six heads of courts and 26 other judicial officers. Approval and confirmation procedures for these appointments involve State Governors and respective State Houses of Assembly.
