Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has called on both public and private sectors to ensure the timely payment of the new minimum wage of ₦35,000 to their employees before Christmas.
The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress issued a caution, stating that failure to pay the new minimum wage could dampen Christmas festivities for workers.
Oshiomhole, a former Governor of Edo State, conveyed this message on Tuesday during the 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Non-Academics Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions in Abuja.
He emphasized the need for uniform implementation across all states and sectors, highlighting the importance of addressing any discrepancies. Oshiomhole urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to intervene and resolve issues related to the non-implementation of the ₦35,000 minimum wage in some states.
The senator stressed that the new minimum wage should be applied inclusively, covering both public and private sectors nationwide. He underscored the potential consequences, stating that employers who fail to comply risk experiencing a joyless Christmas season.
In conclusion, Oshiomhole urged stakeholders to address these concerns promptly to ensure that every worker, regardless of their sector or location, receives the ₦35,000 minimum wage before the upcoming festive season.
