Climate Change Initiative: Zamfara To Distribute 2000 Clean Cookstoves to Residents

The Zamfara state government has announced its commitment to distributing 2000 clean cookstoves to impoverished and vulnerable households as part of its climate action agenda. Mahmud Abdullahi, the Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, revealed this during an interview with journalists in Dubai at the ongoing global climate change conference, COP28.

Mr. Abdullahi highlighted that the Save80 cooking stoves to be distributed are designed to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent. The objective of this initiative is to encourage residents to actively participate in the state’s climate action efforts and simultaneously raise awareness about the impact of climate change through incentivized measures.

“This initiative aims to benefit the community by curbing deforestation and reducing the number of trees being cut down,” stated Mr. Abdullahi. He further explained that the state is also actively pursuing green energy solutions, with plans underway to establish a solar farm in Zamfara capable of generating approximately 30 megawatts of energy for the state.

“With a current population of about 9.5 million in Zamfara, this energy project will provide steady and stable electricity to approximately 4 million residents,” the commissioner added.

Mr. Abdullahi highlighted the success achieved by Zamfara at COP, emphasizing that the state secured partnerships with various organizations, both public and private. These collaborations include Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and institutional strengthening initiatives, with financial contributions pledged by partners and NGOs.

Additionally, Mr. Abdullahi announced that the international organization GGI Global Initiative has committed to assisting Zamfara in developing a comprehensive climate action plan. This plan will guide the state in implementing effective adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration is taking a proactive approach by funding two pilot climate action projects to align with carbon market principles, further emphasizing Zamfara’s commitment to sustainable environmental practices.
