In a decisive move, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has set a strict 14-day ultimatum for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct crucial bye-elections for the 27 vacant constituencies within the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The urgency behind the NDC’s demand stems from the recent defection of 27 lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Daniel Okwa, the convener of the NDC, expressed profound concerns about the potential democratic repercussions of these political events during a press conference held today.
Drawing attention to Section 109 (g) of the Nigerian Constitution, Okwa underlined that the actions of the defected lawmakers signify their relinquishment of their seats, necessitating the immediate requirement for fresh elections to fill the void.
He vehemently cautioned that the defection by the 27 lawmakers constitutes a clear breach of the Constitution, emphasizing the imperative for their swift removal from their positions. The NDC also issued a stern warning to INEC, urging strict compliance with legal obligations and threatening collective action by citizens should the electoral body fail to fulfill its duties.
Additionally, the NDC called upon the President to unequivocally distance himself from these political maneuvers, stressing that any association or tacit approval could potentially undermine the sanctity of the democratic process.
