Group Calls NASS To Probe Involvement Of Influential Figures In Zamfara Banditry

A northern organization, Arewa Mu Farka, has urged the National Assembly to launch an investigation into the alleged involvement of influential individuals in the prolonged banditry plaguing the North West.

Despite 90 days passing since the abduction of female students from the Federal University of Gusau, Zamfara State, the victims remain in captivity, according to the group.

Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi on Thursday, the leader of the group, Haruna Aliyu Ningi, called on the government to bolster security efforts in the region and expressed concern about the military’s effectiveness in addressing the security issues.

Ningi questioned the military’s ability to rescue the abducted girls, emphasizing the importance of decisive action. He cited historical instances where the Nigerian military demonstrated swift and effective responses, such as the Maitasine uprising in the 1980s and actions against Boko Haram during the regime of late Umar Yar’Adua.

Expressing disappointment in the current situation, Ningi highlighted the inability of the military to apprehend notorious bandits, including Turji, who have terrorized residents in the subregion for the past six years, particularly in Zamfara. He raised suspicions that bandits might be exploited to steal the country’s resources under the guise of banditry, calling for a thorough investigation into these allegations.
