NSCDC Officer Behind The Viral “OGA AT THE TOP” Promoted To Deputy Commandant-General

Shem Obafiaye, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer known for the viral “Oga At The Top” remark, has recently been promoted to the position of Deputy Commandant-General.

Back in 2013, Obafiaye, then the Lagos commandant of the NSCDC, gained widespread attention during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television breakfast program. When asked to provide the NSCDC website, he stuttered and humorously deferred, saying, “The website is… excuse me… wait… it can only be made known by my Oga at the top,” accompanied by a pointing finger towards the sky and a cheerful smile.

Pressed for more details by the show hosts, he added, “I cannot categorically tell you one now, and my Oga at the top would give you another one.” This incident led to the creation of the viral catchphrase “Oga At The Top,” turning into a meme, inspiring danceable tunes for club-goers, and appearing on T-shirts with a caricature of Obafiaye.

Following this incident, Obafiaye was redeployed from his position as the Lagos commandant of the NSCDC. Fast forward ten years, and he is now being promoted.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, recently decorated Obafiaye, along with two of his colleagues, Fasiu Adeyinka (former Kwara commandant) and Raji (former Imo commandant), as Deputy Commandants-General.

“As the chairman of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), I decorated the three new Deputy Commandants General of the NSCDC,” stated the minister on Wednesday.

Notably, on checking the NSCDC website during the preparation of this story, a message boldly declared, ‘This website is under construction.’

It is worth mentioning that on December 1, the federal government approved the promotion of 32,361 personnel across all ranks in the parastatals under the Ministry of Interior.
