Supreme Court Sets Date to Review Final Decision on Kano Gubernatorial Appeal

The Supreme Court has scheduled a crucial hearing regarding the Kano State governorship controversy. Governor Kabir Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is contesting the Appeal Court’s decision that upheld his removal, replacing him with Dr Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the March 11 governorship poll.

Barrister Bashir Tudun Waziri, legal representative for Governor Yusuf, confirmed the notification of the hearing to their legal team. The appeal emanates from the tribunal’s decision, which ousted Governor Yusuf, citing his non-registration as an NNPP member during the election.

Amidst these events, conflicting orders emerged in the Certified True Copy of the judgment. Justice Moore Adumein’s ruling, particularly on Page 68, favored the 1st respondent, further complicating the dispute.

Both the APC and NNPP claimed victory based on the judgment, prompting NNPP to file an appeal before the Supreme Court, contesting the Court of Appeal’s decision that upheld the governorship election petition tribunal’s ruling.

Gboyega Awomolo, SAN, representing the appellant, outlined ten grounds for challenging the appeal. He specifically addressed the entirety of the Court of Appeal’s judgment, except the conclusion and orders at page 67 of the Certified True Copy, emphasizing the favorable cost order for the appellant.

This hearing at the Supreme Court marks a pivotal moment in resolving the contentious Kano State governorship dispute.
