In a new twist of events, the Federal Government has placed former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on a security watchlist. Emefiele was recently released from Kuje prisons after successfully meeting his bail conditions on Friday, December 22, 2023, as reported by Politics Nigeria.
The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in charge of Kuje Correctional Centre, Adamu Sampson Duza, officially confirmed Emefiele’s release to journalists on Saturday. Duza stated, “I can confirm to you that he (Emefiele) has met his bail conditions, hence he has no reason to remain in our facility. He met his bail condition and was released past 2 pm yesterday (Friday).”
However, fresh concerns arose soon after Emefiele’s release, revealing that security agencies are closely monitoring his movements. Sources from the Nigeria Immigration Service disclosed that the federal government has directed the Service to keep a vigilant eye on Emefiele’s activities both within and outside the country.
Simultaneously, private investigator Jim Obaze has brought to light a significant corruption scandal during Emefiele’s tenure at the CBN. In a report submitted to President Bola Tinubu, Obaze alleges that Emefiele operated over 500 illegal foreign bank accounts and orchestrated the acquisition of commercial banks through proxies, among other serious claims. As of now, Emefiele has not responded to the allegations raised by Obaze, leaving the public awaiting his clarification.
