Sadiya Umar-Farouk, the immediate past Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, has issued a response to the ongoing money laundering case involving her and a contractor, James Okwete, investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Despite the investigation and the recent discovery of ₦37,170,855,753.44 allegedly laundered in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs during her tenure, Umar-Farouk confidently asserted that she remains proud of her actions as a minister.
It is worth noting that the EFCC’s findings unveiled substantial funds allegedly misappropriated within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, which oversees various key agencies. These agencies include the National Social Investment Office, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, among others.
Umar-Farouq, appointed as the pioneer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019, held the distinction of being the youngest cabinet member at the time.
