Ex-Senator’s Phone Hacked: Friends Lose Millions to Fraudsters in Vain Attempt

In a troubling turn of events, former federal lawmaker Tokunbo Afikuyomi found himself at the mercy of fraudsters who successfully hacked into his phone, gaining control of his WhatsApp messages. Impersonating Afikuyomi, the criminals sent messages to his contacts, urgently seeking financial assistance. This resulted in some unsuspecting friends transferring substantial amounts of money to accounts provided by the scammers, while others, more discerning, raised the alarm.

Afikuyomi acted swiftly, reporting the incident to security agencies and commending the police anti-fraud unit for their prompt response. Ongoing investigations aim to trace the fraudsters and uncover the account details used in the fraudulent activities. In response to the security breach, Afikuyomi has temporarily suspended the use of his WhatsApp number. He expressed concern about the apparent lack of due diligence in the country’s banking system, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced security measures and strict compliance with data privacy laws.

The former lawmaker is determined to collaborate with relevant agencies to dismantle the syndicate responsible for these fraudulent activities. He underscored the challenges presented by technology in today’s world and thanked those who responded promptly to mitigate the impact of the scam. Special recognition was given to key figures, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, for their efforts in unveiling the perpetrators of this crime.
