Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), dismissed allegations of reaching an agreement with President Bola Tinubu regarding the Supreme Court verdict on the Kano State governorship election. Following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of Abba Kabir Yusuf as the duly elected governor of Kano, Kwankwaso emphasized that no such agreement was made.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso clarified his longstanding relationship with Tinubu, highlighting their shared political history. He stressed their joint efforts in founding the APC and participating in political struggles. Kwankwaso expressed confidence in the judiciary’s decision, emphasizing that lies have a short life.
Regarding the Kano State governor, Kabir Yusuf, Kwankwaso asserted that he could only provide advice and would not assert authority over him. He acknowledged the governor’s autonomy and expressed readiness to collaborate where necessary. Kwankwaso urged people to allow leaders to prove their worth, emphasizing the importance of fair judgment in governance.
Reflecting on the Supreme Court’s correction of previous errors, Kwankwaso pointed out that accountability in other climes might have led to resignations of those responsible for flawed judgments in lower courts.
